The SANS Local Mentor Program really does a good job at reinforcing the
course material and saving the student/student's company money in travel
expenses. One of the biggest benefits I see from this program is the
interaction with the volunteer mentor and students. The classes are
generally smaller, the students have read the material prior to the
sessions, and there is time to ask questions as well as discuss topics
in more detail. Some sessions may be geared towards more hands-on
practice. This is dependent on the volunteer mentor. I have lead two
Track 3 mentoring sessions and have heard from the students that they
actually understand more of the material since the learning is spread
over a longer timeframe and they can ask more questions in a smaller
class environment. I believe it is a good investment for both the
learning aspect and the cost savings aspect.
