[unisog] Client Backup/Replication strategies

Hi-

I'd have to play with it a bit, but I believe the way it works is that
as part of the log on/off process the folders are synchronized, so they
really are on the local machine.

So far as messing with AD is concerned, it's easy enough to create a sub
OU that others own. We do it all the time. Just allow permissions only
on that OU and you're set.

Right, but, they won't let me touch AD here, and if the folder is
redirected then it's not on the workstation, correct? So when our users
take home their laptops where is the My Docs...on the network share, I
presume.

You can use Active Directory policies to re-direct the mydocs folder to
a share. I use it all the time with no problems.

Interesting, I'm at Loma Linda School of Pharmacy. What we need is
something that would do this, but the entire My Documents folder, and
perhaps My Desktop folder. This would be more useful to me than saving
specific file types. (What happens if you miss something obscure?)
Presently, we don't have anything. We instruct our users to indeed USE
their network share; if they don't they have to settle for the
compromise.

I am beginning to search for a client backup product. Something that
would basically replicate specified file types in real time to a network
location. Basically, the same general functionality provided by
Microsoft's Folder Redirection, but smarter and more flexible. I was
curious of the approach that others may have taken in protecting the
data that their users do not save to their network share, or if anyone
had any suggestions of products that might accomplish this.
