We, at The University of Auckland, are currently trialling a SurfControl
(now WebSense) software for doing passive monitoring and logging of urls.
*If* we buy the product then we intend to run it in passive monitoring
mode and produce reports, say monthly, for each faculty giving
*aggregate* figures for such things a the general categories e.g.
technology, health, news, entertainment, adult, etc.... Also possibly
top ten sites for each unit. In general we would not reveal browsing
habits of individuals without high level authorisation.
We already grab outgoing urls and referer for everything on port 80 --
we have used this several times in tracking malware and the data has
also been used in HR matters.
Russell.
