Just to update your references, RFCs 821 and 822 have been obsoleted by
RFCs 2821 and 2822 (respectively).

The new versions roll-up changes discussed in post-821/822 RFCs and
are intended to reflect the newer practices on the Internet.

RFC 2821 (section 7.7) also now suggests that MTAs should permit the
admins to reject relaying from identifiable sources.
