your points regarding trust are well advised. Balance is important and 
just as a computer becomes less useable as it gets more and more locked 
down, so becomes life in general.  There comes a point when you can say 
something or someone is so secure as to be useless.

Not to muddy the waters of your postal analogy but in the US, people 
living in rural areas still use such "half-duplex" mailboxes to which 
you allude. They have a metal flag (semaphore) typically painted red,  
which, when raised, indicates to the postman  that the mailbox is in 
"send" mode (i.e. has something in it to be picked up by the postman) 
and which when lowered indicates that the mail box is ready to receive  
or HAS received mail. Unfortunately, for those of us who have such 
mailboxes, and this includes people in suburban as well as rural areas, 
when the flag is down, you cannot tell without inspecting the contents 
of the box whether or not it is empty!
