Today's issue of NewsScan, one of the most intelligent clipping and
commentary e-newsletters ever produced, has this item:

HIGH ROAD AND LOW ROAD FOR DOWNLOADS
Without their knowledge, the 20 million users of KaZaA, an Internet service
that allows users to swap music files online, also have on their computers
software to activate a music-for-fee service called Altnet, intended to put
online music "back in the content owners' control, by allowing media
companies to charge for their copyrighted material. The pay software's
developer, Brilliant Digital Entertainment, believes that even though
customers can obtain music files distributed by other users, they will
choose to pay for higher-quality versions offered through Altnet. However,
the company's CEO admitted the possibility that "to some extent" Altnet
would make Kazaa irrelevant. (New York Times 3 Apr 2002)
