802.1x for wired LAN's

Has anyone deployed 802.1x authentication for their wired networks? Many of the deployments of 802.1x have focused on using EAP types that are appropriate for securing wireless LAN's (using EAPOL-Key distribution, for instance), but it sounds like 802.1x has a lot more potential in providing AAA-style services for wired networks.

What kind of deployments are in use for wired-networks? What clients, EAP methods are people using? What challenges were encountered in deploying this technology?

Thanks.
