Of course there was a preventative measure available to the student!
They could have kept away from the bright, shiny attachment, the sleazy
web site, or the attractive but shady application.  They could have
disabled the vulnerable service or firewalled the ports.  They could
have chosen to use a safer browser and mail reader.  Finally, they
could have chosen an operating system less plagues by malware.
