We're in the process of deploying a Jabber/XMPP service on campus, towards
productionization in January. The particular implementation is
open-source/commercially supported product called Jive Messenger
(http://www.jivesoftware.com/) which, to date, we've been really happy
with.

XMPP allows communication with other protocols via external services
called transports, so we'll /either/ be supporting transports to the
common networks (AIM, MSN, Yahoo!) via transports on the server or by
distributing a multi-protocol client.

XMPP was choosen because it's end-point to end-point secure, open, and
fast-growing.
